Eddie Jones' World Cup dream is alive after latest fitness update

Eddie Jones' longstanding dream of winning a World Cup as a head coach was boosted this week with an injury update from fly-half Quade Cooper.

The 34-year-old has been out of action since August after rupturing his Achilles tendon while representing the Wallabies against Argentina in the Rugby Championship. There were fears when he initially suffered the injury that his World Cup chances would be in danger, but a recent video shared by Cooper on Instagram suggests he is well on course to be in contention to make the squad for the global showcase in September.

Cooper shared a video of himself running at 75 percent, which is an encouraging step in his recovery process. He wrote: "Today's accelerations and tempo runs at 75% feeling 100. Damn this journey has been everything I expected and more. I remember laying on the field and all I could think about was how tough the next 9 months would be but I knew I had prepared myself for the storm I was about to face. You will face many storms in your life but eventually, they will pass."

Despite suggesting a few weeks ago that Cooper was facing a battle to make his World Cup squad due to his lack of playing time, Jones gave the veteran a lifeline recently. When asked whether the No10 can make another World Cup on ABC’s Offsiders panel show, Jones said: “Yes I think so, he’s recovering well.

“I had a quick chat to him in Brisbane. He looked full of beans, he’s going back to play for his club in Japan, Kintetsu, who aren’t doing too well.

“They haven’t won a game so they need a bit of Quade magic. Get his confidence back, get them to win a few games and we will see where he can take us in the World Cup.”
